Hassan: Farmers in drought-hit Hassan are facing a fodder shortage even as relief funds have yet to be released, despite the state govt declaring all eight taluks drought-affected. Already reeling from crop losses and financial stress, they have sought fodder banks and subsidised cattle feed to protect livestock and dairy incomes. The district has 5,61,037 livestock, including cows and buffaloes. Department of animal husbandry and veterinary services estimates each animal needs at least 5kg green fodder per day, while the current fodder stock is estimated at 562 tonnes.Farmers have asked authorities to assess demand and distribute available fodder to areas facing the most severe shortage. They have also sought fodder banks across the district, tailored to the specific needs of each taluk, and urged the govt to direct cattle-feed manufacturing units to supply feed to farmers and milk producers at subsidised rates.Hassan is largely an agricultural district, and dairy farming is a key livelihood for many households. An estimated 60% to 70% of farmers in the district depend on dairy farming. A fodder shortage could reduce milk production and weaken cattle health, deepening losses for farmers and milk producers.Hanumegowda, deputy director of department of animal husbandry and veterinary services, told TOI that the department was taking precautionary measures to prevent fodder shortages. “Reports are being collected daily from the taluk-level offices.”Farmers and milk producers have urged the district administration and the state govt to take timely measures before the fodder crisis worsens.
