NEW DELHI: Former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and ex-BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was showered with flower petals by supporters as he reached his residence on Monday, after a Delhi court acquitted him in the alleged sexual harassment case filed by six women wrestlers.The celebrations unfolded outside Singh’s residence, where supporters welcomed him with flower petals following the verdict delivered by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court.Earlier in the day, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashwini Panwar acquitted Singh and former WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar in the case.The court had reserved its verdict after hearing final arguments last week.The case arose from allegations made by six women wrestlers, following which Delhi Police filed a chargesheet against Singh on June 15, 2023.He had been charged under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.In May 2024, the court ordered framing of charges of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation against Singh but discharged him in relation to allegations made by one of the six complainants. The court had also directed that charges be framed against Vinod Tomar.Both Singh and Tomar remained on bail during the trial.The case had drawn nationwide attention in 2023 after leading Indian wrestlers staged protests accusing Singh of sexual harassment and demanding his arrest.
