Prayagraj: The water level of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in city are beginning to stabilize and recede after a period of heavy monsoon surge and high water release from upstream barrages that had brought waters close to local landmarks like the Nagvasuki temple.Offering a little respite to the administration and residents alike, the water level of the Ganga and Yamuna is receding at two points— Chhatnag and Naini on Sunday. Officials of the flood control department said, “Both the rivers showed a receding trend Since Sunday morning, but we are still maintaining a close watch.”At 12 noon on Sunday, the water level of the Ganga at Phaphamau and Chhatnag was recorded at 81.27 m and 80.14m, while the Yamuna at Naini was flowing at 80.55m.Officials said the water level of the Ganga and Yamuna at Chhatnag and Naini has receded 8 and 16 cm respectively every four hours while Ganga at Phaphamau was stable with 81.27 meters.At 8 am, water level of Ganga and Yamuna at Phaphamau, Chhatnag and Naini was recorded 81.27 , 80.30 and 80.63 meters respectively that is, more than two meters below the danger mark of 84.73 m.The receding level news has brought relief to residents. Although local dministration has moved to set up relief camps for flood victims, officials claimed that next 24 hours would decide further course of action.At every flood season, localities like Mehdauri, Myrobad, Shankar ghat, Govindpur, Chilla,Kakraha ghat, Sadiapur, Bakshi Moda, karelabagh, Karehada and adjoing areas usuafally face flood situation.Officials,meanwhile, said the rise behind water level of Ganga and Yamuna was due to water released through dams and Ken, Betwa and Chambal rivers from neighbouring states.Meanwhile, the district administration, along with the SDRFand Jal police are maintaining a watch on river banks particularly low lying areas.
