Srinagar, Aug 27: Srinagar Police have registered a case against five shopkeepers for allegedly obstructing pedestrian and vehicular movement by placing matting material on the road outside their shops at busy Jahangir Chowk.
Police Station Shaheed Gunj registered FIR No. 72/2026 under Section 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following observations made during routine patrolling in the area.
According to police, the shopkeepers had placed matting material on the road, occupying public space and affecting the smooth movement of pedestrians and vehicles.
Police said such obstructions can lead to traffic bottlenecks and increase the risk of accidents, particularly at a busy commercial location like Jahangir Chowk.
An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the alleged obstruction.
Police have also urged shopkeepers and the public to avoid occupying roads and other public spaces in a manner that disrupts traffic or pedestrian movement.
The action, police said, is part of efforts to maintain public safety, ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent accidents in busy commercial areas.
