Namakkal: A major fire broke out in a godown used for drying dyed baniyan (vests) in Samaya Sangili in Namakkal district’s Pallipalayam on Sunday, destroying goods and machinery worth several lakhs of rupees.The godown was rented by M Venkatesan of Gobichettipalayam in Erode district, who runs a garment business. On the day of the incident, workers had placed the dyed baniyan garments for drying as usual. “Heavy rains that lashed with strong winds in the area triggered an electrical short circuit, which quickly set the godown ablaze,” said a police officer from Pallipalayam station.Firefighters from Pallipalayam rushed to the spot and battled the blaze for nearly an hour before bringing it under control. Despite their efforts, the godown and its contents, including garments and production equipment, were destroyed.Pallipalayam police have registered a case.
