Nagpur: A fire broke out in the parking area of an under-construction building at Anandam World City in Ganeshpeth on Thursday afternoon, gutting construction material and triggering panic in the locality. Thick plumes of smoke billowed into the sky, drawing the attention of residents and passers-by.The blaze erupted at the extension of the housing project being developed by a private firm. Construction material, including pipes, centering boards, machinery and electrical wiring, was destroyed in the fire. The loss is estimated at around Rs 1 lakh, officials said.The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Fire and Emergency Services Department rushed four fire tenders from Cotton Market and Ganjipeth fire stations to the spot after receiving an alert at 3.52 pm. Firefighters brought the blaze under control within about an hour, preventing it from spreading to other portions of the construction site.According to the fire department, a short circuit is suspected to have triggered the blaze, though the exact cause will be confirmed after a detailed investigation.In a timely intervention, firefighters safely removed 10 LPG cylinders kept at the site for workers’ cooking before the flames could reach them, averting what officials described as a potential major accident.The fire control room received the emergency call from contractor Atanu Guha, who informed authorities after noticing smoke rising from the parking area. Fire officials said the prompt alert and quick response of firefighting teams helped contain the blaze before it could cause extensive damage. No injuries or casualties were reported.
