Udupi: Malpe police arrested the fifth accused in a case related to the alleged transmission of confidential information concerning Indian Navy ships. The accused, identified as Alif Islam,21, a native of Bargaria village in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, was taken into custody on Monday. He was reportedly residing in a rented house at Kokilakkad in Marayur village, Munnar, in Kerala’s Idukki district at the time of his arrest.The arrest was made in connection with a case registered at the Malpe police station under Sections 152 and 61(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which pertain to unlawful activities and sharing sensitive national security information.

Police produced the accused before the jurisdictional court on Tuesday, which remanded him in judicial custody until Feb 21. Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said he is suspected to be a Bangladeshi national. “Once we get confirmation,we will add the necessary legal provisions,” he said.
