A suspect was apprehended on Wednesday evening after a firing incident at a private function in Jammu that was attended by Farooq Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, police said.
The accused, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, was overpowered by security personnel at the venue immediately after the incident, officials said.
According to sources, the incident took place when the two leaders were preparing to leave the function. It was not immediately known whether the VVIPs were the intended targets.
Senior police officers reached the spot soon after the incident was reported and initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances and motive behind the firing.
In a statement, a spokesperson of Jammu and Kashmir Police confirmed the development.
“An incident of firing was reported at a function where JKNC chief Farooq Abdullah and Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary were present. One person has been arrested in connection with the incident. Further details are awaited,” the police spokesperson said.(KNS)
