GURGAON: A review of serious criminal cases registered over the past 10 years has led Faridabad Police to identify 628 accused who have gone missing after securing bail, prompting authorities to initiate proceedings to declare them bail jumpers and take legal action against their sureties.The exercise is part of the police commissioner’s RJSF pilot project aimed at tracking people accused in heinous offences, including murder, robbery, dacoity, attempt to murder, extortion and Arms Act cases, while strengthening surveillance on habitual offenders.According to DCP (Crime) Rajesh Kumar Mohan, “Police analysed records of serious crimes registered over the last decade and identified 3,499 offenders for verification. The names were distributed among police stations, whose teams carried out door-to-door verification at the addresses provided by the accused.”Of the total, police have physically verified 2,212 accused, accounting for 63.22% of those identified, while verification of the remaining 1,287 is underway.“During the exercise, 1,368 accused were found living at their recorded addresses, 161 were lodged in different jails and 55 were found to have died.” the officer said.Police said 628 accused were not found at their listed addresses and proceedings have been initiated to declare them bail jumpers.Officials said legal action has also begun against the sureties of absconding accused to ensure their appearance before courts.Applications under Section 491 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have already been moved against the sureties of three bail jumpers, while similar action is being prepared against the sureties of eight more absconding accused.As part of the campaign, police have also opened 35 history sheets against habitual offenders and arrested 13 people wanted in recent criminal cases.Police said the drive is intended not only to trace absconding accused but also to maintain close surveillance on repeat offenders and curb serious crime.
