Prayagraj: Prayagraj Junction is set to get two additional platforms in near future, increasing total number from existing 10 to 12. The expansion is part of the ongoing redevelopment plan to improve passenger convenience and accommodate rising rail traffic. In the preparatory exercise, mega non-interlocking (NI) yard was blocked for over six hours at the station on Thursday. The complete NI block was enforced from 11:40 am to 5:40 pm, although trrain operations resumed slightly earlier at 5:15 pm. Railway officials confirmed that Phase 1A of the NI work was commissioned successfully, marking a crucial milestone in the station’s upgrade process. The first train to arrive after commissioning was the Kalka Express, which reached Platform 4 at 5:39 pm. Shortly later, Vande Bharat Express from Prayagraj Rambagh arrived at Platform 7 at 5:42 pm.In line with the redevelopment blueprint, railway authorities have disconnected Line numbers 14 and 15, which were situated between Platforms 8 and 9. The step is expected to create space for the addition of new platforms and better track alignment. Officials also stated that groundwork for the larger redevelopment project has been completed and piling work for structural upgrades will begin soon.Additionally, length of Platforms 9 and 10 and that of 7 and 8 will be extended to accommodate longer trains and improve operational efficiency. The expansion and modernisation of the junction are expected to significantly boost capacity, streamline train movements and provide improved amenities to passengers, reinforcing Prayagraj’s importance as a major railway hub.
