Mohali: A former sarpanch was brutally attacked in Kurawal village near Dera Bassi in a suspected case of targeted assault, leaving him critically injured with both legs fractured. A video of the incident has since surfaced on social media, drawing widespread concern. According to initial reports, the victim was intercepted early in the morning while on his routine milk delivery round. At around 6 am, a group of nearly five youths, reportedly travelling in a Maruti Suzuki Swift car, stopped him on the road and attacked him with iron rods. Despite the victim’s attempts to hand over his mobile phone and belongings, the assailants continued the assault for nearly 15 to 20 minutes, during which both his legs were broken.The attackers fled the scene after the assault. The injured former Sarpanch was rushed to the civil hospital in Dera Bassi, where he remains under treatment. Doctors have described his condition as critical. Police registered an FIR in connection with the incident and initiated a probe. Dera Bassi sub-divisional police officer (SP) Bikramjit Singh Brar confirmed that the accused were arrested within hours of the incident. Providing details, the SP said the victim, who runs a dairy business and supplies milk, had an ongoing monetary dispute related to his business. He stated that the accused allegedly attacked him over the dispute and used force, resulting in severe injuries, including fractures to both legs.The victim, in his statement, claimed he has no personal enmity with anyone and expressed concern over threats to his life. He has appealed to the authorities for justice and protection.
