Prajwal Revanna taking into custody after court remanded to police custody

BENGALURU: Former MP Prajwal Revanna has landed in police custody for two days over the use of a mobile phone inside his cell at Central Prison, Parappana Agrahara, last month. The development comes after investigators intensified the probe into the violation inside the prison last month, with police now set to question Revanna as part of the case. The Parappana Agrahara police produced Prajwal and his former cellmate Pratap Rai before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Court 42 on Tuesday afternoon, seeking his PC on a body warrant. The police remanded both the accused in PC for two days. The police took him to the Parappana Agrahara police station, which is located less than 500 metres from the prison.Prajwal is accused No 2 in the case, while Pratap is accused No 1.During the surprise raid at the Central Prison on August 11, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) police found a 5G smartphone in his high-security cell on the first floor.According to police, the phone contained several applications, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, among other OTT platforms, and a few videos. The apps were password-protected, and neither inmate had disclosed the passwords during questioning. The police also found a charger, a pen drive and a scribbling pad from the cell.During the initial inquiry, Prajwal claimed ownership of a scribbling pad in which he had noted down a few phone numbers, including those of his family members, friends and advocate.According to police, Pratap had allegedly admitted that the mobile phone, charger and pen drive belonged to him.The officials also found that Prajwal was in civilian clothes instead of the convicted prisoner uniform.Prajwal is serving a life sentence after being convicted in a rape case in August last year, while Pratap is arrested in connection with a POCSO case. The prison officials were suspended for dereliction of duty following the contraband found in the cell.A senior officer said, “We will be questioning Prajwal and Pratap about who and when provided the phone and other seized items to them and how they had been using them, as well as the role of the prison personnel who helped them smuggle the contraband inside the prison.”
