Pune: The former director of a prominent educational institute in Tathawade faces a case for allegedly misappropriating Rs4.98 crore and stealing confidential data.The economic offences wing of the Pimpri Chinchwad police registered a case in this regard with the Wakad police on Saturday.A Pimpri Chinchwad police officer said the institute conducted an internal audit, which revealed that the former director had allegedly misused his position and misappropriated funds between Oct 2023 and Nov 2025.The audit showed that Rs3.3 crore was paid as salaries to staff and faculty without maintaining proper records. Additionally, payments were made to admission consultants even after admissions were cancelled, resulting in a loss of Rs1.1 crore to the institute. “The audit report was submitted in June. It detected the misappropriation of funds worth Rs4.98 crore. We received an application in this regard. After preliminary investigations, a case was registered on Saturday,” the officer said.He said the suspect had been charged under sections 316 (criminal breach of trust), 318 (cheating) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.On Sunday, the institute issued a statement that said its internal audit had brought to light serious financial irregularities. It said a complaint had been lodged and the investigators had their full cooperation.
