Prayagraj: In a major push towards sustainable transport, the Indian Railways is set to introduce electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities at major railway stations across the country, with the process already underway in the North Central Railway (NCR) zone. Tenders have been floated for setting up charging stations at Prayagraj Junction, Manikpur and Aligarh railway stations under the Prayagraj Division.According to railway officials, the e-auction for awarding the contracts will be held on July 22, and the charging facilities are expected to become operational within six months of the allotment. An earlier tender process was cancelled, following which fresh tenders were issued.Under the plan, the railway administration will provide the required space within station premises, while the successful bidder will develop the infrastructure and install the charging points. The facilities will cater to both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, allowing EV users to recharge their vehicles while using railway services.Railway officials said the initiative is aimed at promoting environmentally friendly transport and supporting the increasing adoption of electric vehicles. Besides rail passengers, the charging stations will also be available to other visitors using the station parking areas.To improve passenger convenience, each charging station will have an adjoining waiting area where vehicle owners can relax while their vehicles are being charged. The space is also proposed to be developed as a cafeteria or lounge, offering basic amenities during the charging period.PRO, Prayagraj Division, Amit Kumar Singh said the project represents an important step towards environmental conservation and will provide a much-needed facility at railway stations. Officials believe that as the number of electric vehicles continues to rise, railway stations will emerge as important charging hubs, benefiting passengers as well as the general public while encouraging cleaner modes of transport.
