Chennai: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday urged the state and Centre to act on a war footing to offset the likely loss of around 600 govt medical seats if private medical colleges secure UGC approval to become deemed universities.Palaniswami said the conversion of private medical colleges into deemed universities would shrink TN’s govt quota, depriving students from marginalised sections of opportunities to pursue medical education. He said the state govt should immediately strengthen infrastructure and academic standards in govt medical colleges to increase the number of seats to compensate for those likely to be lost from the govt quota.Palaniswami also appealed to the Centre not to reduce the state’s share of medical and engineering seats while granting deemed university status to private medical and engineering colleges.
