Hassan: With rain deficit hitting farm activities in Hassan district, district minister KM Shivalingegowda directed officials to ensure all farmers are covered under crop insurance. Speaking after inspecting drought conditions in Arasikere taluk, the minister said the district was facing one of its worst dry spells. “We had drought in 2018 too, but not on this scale. While drinking water shortage is limited, the bigger problem is fodder shortage for cattle. Maize crop has been hit by leaf blight, leading to fodder scarcity,” he said. The minister asked officials to ensure immediate interim compensation for farmers who have insured their crops and suffered losses. He said state govt would compile data on unsown area and crop loss and submit a report to Centre seeking declaration of drought-hit areas. “We cannot declare it (areas) as drought-hit. After the Centre gives its nod, both state and central govts will release compensation,” he added.Poor sowing: According to officials, only 32% sowing has been completed in the district. In Arasikere, it is just 4%, and even that is damaged. Leaf blight has destroyed maize in several places. The minister said the priority now was drinking water, fodder for livestock, relief and employment. He asked officials from concerned departments to work in full coordination.
