Mumbai: A second-year engineering student who had been arrested on Saturday in connection with a hit-and-run case in Vile Parle on Aug 18 was produced before a court and released on Rs 5,000 bail on Sunday, police said. The bike he was riding was seized.Juhu police said the student was tracked to his home in Vile Parle based on a complaint filed by the victim’s father, a businessman and a gas distributor from Vile Parle West, whose 15-year-old daughter was knocked down in the morning while she was going to tuition. Police said the accused had a valid driving licence and was arrested for allegedly fleeing after the accident without providing medical aid to the victim. A cognisable offence was registered against the student based on the complaint.The accused was traced with the help of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage captured at the spot on NS Road (Gulmohar Road) in Vile Parle (West) and along the route he took to reach his home in Vile Parle (West). “The engineering student claimed that he was riding back home after college when he knocked down the girl. He claimed the girl suddenly came in front and did not see due to blind spots when an auto rickshaw passed ahead. He waited for 10 minutes before speeding away fearing a mob attack. He too suffered minor bruises on leg. His bike has been seized. He was released on Sunday after the court granted him bail of Rs 5,000,” said a police officer of the Juhu police station.The officer said that in cases of rash and negligent driving that carry less than seven years’ punishment, the accused was detained and released after being served notice. “In this case, the accused fled the spot due to which he was booked under the Motor Vehicle Act sections for dangerous driving, fails to follow rules related to traffic accidents, such as running away from an accident site or failing to give required information to the police and fails to report an accident or help an injured person. He is also charged under the BNS sections for rash and negligent driving,” said the officer.A Juhu police officer said the victim was stable.The gas distributor said his daughter was recovering from the accident trauma.
