An elephant calf is trying to climb out of the pit and rejoin its mother

Madikeri: An elephant calf got separated from its mother and fell into a water pit in Nalvattekare village of Nellihudikeri on Tuesday night.The calf, believed to be about five years old, reportedly fell into a small pit dug for a piggery around 8.30 pm. After the calf fell into the pit, its mother spent nearly an hour trying to rescue it. Residents later alerted the forest department about the incident.By the time forest department officials and staff reached the spot, the calf had managed to climb out of the pit and rejoin its mother and the rest of the herd. Villagers said several wild elephants have been roaming in Baradi and Nalvattekare villages and recently attacked a labourer. They expressed concern over elephants venturing close to residential areas in the evenings, creating an atmosphere of fear among residents.The villagers urged forest department officials to take immediate steps to drive the wild elephants back into the forest.
