MSEDCL starts probe after electrocution death

Nagpur: More than 48 hours after a 60-year-old woman, Afroz Begum Azim Khan, was electrocuted by a live wire jutting out in a rain-filled stretch in Auliya Nagar near Tajbagh, the power discom, police and civic administration are busy tying the case in knots. Nobody has been held accountable till now. So, is the administration trying to say — nobody is guilty, it’s an accidental death? And as a local resident said, “If a VIP would have been electrocuted, would the administration be sitting idle? What happened in Tajbagh can happen in Civil Lines. Tragedy can hit home anywhere. Afroz Begum’s body lay on the ground for 2 hours, now will the probe take another 2 months?”On the fateful night after MSEDCL personnel snapped power after 2 hours to take the body out of the water, the ground staff then admitted it was electrocution from a live cable. But 2 days later, the administration hasn’t fixed responsibility. On Friday, the electrical inspector launched a formal inquiry, recording statements from residents and victim’s family even as fresh allegations of civic negligence surfaced. Residents demanded criminal action against negligent officials and compensation for the family.Residents alleged the cable was damaged nearly two months ago during drainage pipeline work under AMRUT 2.0 scheme by a NMC contractor, but was not repaired despite remaining live and exposed. Then came the patchwork after 48 hours — NMC sought assistance from MSEDCL to remove the damaged cable from the site and concretised the stretch.
