Balasore: A 65-year-old man was killed after a speeding truck allegedly hit his bicycle from behind while he was returning home after collecting his old age pension money in Mayurbhanj district on Friday.The accident took place near Rangamatia Chhak on National Highway-18 under the Baisinga police station limits. The deceased was identified as Basu Singh, a resident of Rangamatia village.According to police, Basu had gone to the panchayat office located along the highway at around 11.30 am to collect his allowance money. After receiving the money, he started for home on his bicycle.However, when he reached the diversion near Rangamatia Chhak, a speeding truck allegedly rammed into his bicycle from behind. The impact threw Basu onto the road, leaving him critically injured.The truck driver reportedly fled the spot towards Balasore after the accident. Local residents rushed to Basu’s aid and shifted him to Baisinga hospital.As his condition was critical, doctors referred him to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada. He was taken there by ambulance but succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.Baisinga police reached the accident site after receiving information and launched an investigation. Police are making efforts to identify and trace the truck involved in the hit-and-run. The body was sent for post-mortem examination as part of the investigation.
