KALLAKURICHI: An elderly couple were found murdered at their home in Kalrayan Hills in Kallakurichi district on Friday. The crime came to light after the elderly couple, identified as Ramasamy, 70, and his wife R Ponammal, 65, did not come out of their house on Friday for a long time. The neighbours entered the house to check on them, only to find them dead with severe injuries on their heads. They alerted police.A team from Kariyalur police station reached the spot, recovered the bodies and sent them for postmortem. Initial inquiries revealed that the couple were living in a hut erected at their small piece of farmland. Their only son, Kuppusamuy, died at the age of 50 a few years ago. Their granddaughter, K Megala, married A Sathish three years ago. A misunderstanding led Megala to leave Sathish and move in with her grandfather a few months ago. Megala later left the village for Tirupur and joined a garment unit.Police inquiries revealed that Sathish had been forcing her grandparents to convince her and send her to his house. However, her grandparents refused to heed his request. Sathish was the last person seen at the couple’s house on Thursday night. The police suspect Sathish’s involvement in the crime. A grinding stone was found near the two bodies, suggesting that the murderer hit the elderly couple on their heads with the grinding stone.“The brutality of the crime suggests a high degree of intent,” a police official noted. “We are questioning relatives and examining the surrounding area for any clues left behind by the perpetrators,” he said.
