Patna: An elderly couple from Nalanda district attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Ganga river at Barh sub-division of Patna on Sunday. The man was rescued by locals, but his wife was swept away by the strong current of the river. Police said Dheeraj Chaudhary, a resident of Pawapuri Moldiyar Bigha in Nalanda, along with his wife Malti Devi, reached Alaknath ghat and jumped into the river due to a family dispute.The incident occurred around 10am under Barh police station area when the couple jumped into the river. Local divers saved the man, but the woman could not be traced. Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the spot with an SDRF team and began the rescue operation.Braj Kishore Singh, SHO of Barh police station, said the rescued man was admitted to the hospital, but his wife was not yet found. “Due to the spate in the river, it was difficult to locate the victim. Dheeraj told the police that he came from Nalanda and attempted to commit suicide due to a family dispute. Further investigation is underway,” he said.Dheeraj said his elder son beat him and sold his land. He also alleged that his son did not give him food. They arrived in Patna about four days ago and decided to commit suicide.
