Guwahati: A tragic incident has come to light from Udalguri district, where an elderly couple was found dead inside their residence after allegedly dying by suicide, police officials said.According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Narendra Saikia and his wife, Damayanti Saikia. They were found hanging inside their home in Udalguri’s Kalaigaon area. Locals alerted the police after repeated attempts to contact the couple went unanswered. Kalaigaon PS officer-in-charge Jiban P Marak said, “Narendra Saikia was a retired teacher, and both he and his wife were found hanging in the bathroom.”He added that investigators recovered a suicide note in which Saikia cited severe financial hardships as the primary reason behind the act. “We also found pesticide bottles lying on the floor. It needs to be ascertained whether they consumed it or not. Their bodies have been sent to Udalguri Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination,” Marak said.Authorities said the pesticide bottles recovered from the scene have been sent for forensic examination to determine their contents and any possible links to the incident. The police have also seized the suicide note and are analysing it as part of the ongoing investigation to establish any alternate circumstances leading up to the deaths.Nearby residents told the media that the couple’s sons were both away when the incident occurred. They described the couple as warm and friendly, well-liked by everyone in the village.
