Ghaziabad: An elderly couple was allegedly attacked by their younger son and his wife over an ongoing property dispute in Modinagar. Police arrested the son and his wife on Tuesday. The couple is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Meerut and the woman is in a critical condition.The couple, Ramashankar Singh (70) and his wife, Sushila Devi (65), lived in his 100-square-yard house in Harmukhpuri colony. His younger son, Manoj Kumar, his wife, Kiran Devi and their three daughters lived with the couple; and were their primary caregivers. Police said Manoj had been pressing his father for the past three years to transfer the deeds of the house in his name. Disputes between Manoj and his parents would often turn violent. Manoj had even tried to drive his parents out of the house and claim ownership of the property. Family members and neighbours had intervened in the past to solve the conflict.On Monday morning, the dispute escalated once again. It is alleged that around 7am, Manoj and his wife assaulted Ramashankar and Sushila. Fearing another attack, the couple approached the Govindpuri police outpost around 11am and later went to the Modinagar police station at about 5pm. However, they were allegedly told to return later to file a complaint as there were no female officers on duty.The couple returned home around 10pm and went off to sleep in their room. Late at night, Manoj and his wife attacked them with an axe and inflicted multiple blows. Hearing their screams, neighbours rushed to the house and managed to rescue the couple. Both of them sustained deep cuts on their faces, heads and necks. They were admitted to a local hospital and later referred to a hospital in Meerut due to their critical condition. ACP Modinagar Bhaskar Verma said, “Upon receiving information about a life-threatening attack on an elderly couple, the station house officer went to the spot. A case for attempted murder has been registered against Manoj Kumar and his wife. They have been arrested and the axe used has been seized.”
