The process was carrying the idol of Mazgoaoncha Morya Ganpati Mandal from a workshop to its pandal for the 10-day Ganesh festival, police said.

The eggs were allegedly thrown from Continental Heights building when the procession was passing the premises, police said. More than 200 people were part of the procession at the time.

Police have registered an FIR in the case based on the complaint of Yogesh Oramble, an office-bearer of the Mazgoaoncha Morya Ganeshotsav Mandal. After the incident, mandal members gathered outside the building, raised slogans and performed Ganesh aarti.

Police officials intervened and assured them that the matter would be investigated. Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena also assured the office-bearers that appropriate action would be taken.

“We are yet to make arrests and are investigating the matter,” a Byculla police officer said.

Police have registered a case under Sections 299 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings and promoting enmity between different groups and acts prejudicial to maintenance of communal harmony.
