Agartala/Dimapur: Election Commission has announced bypolls for the Dharmanagar assembly constituency in Tripura and for the Koridang assembly constituency (ST) in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district, with polling set for April 9 and counting on May 4.The notification will be issued on Monday. Candidates must file nominations by March 23, which will be scrutinised on March 24. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations is March 26. The entire election process will conclude by May 6.

The bypoll in Tripura was necessitated by the death of assembly speaker Bishwabandhu Sen in Dec last year. Sen collapsed at Agartala railway station on August 8, while returning home after assembly duties. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors diagnosed complications from a brain haemorrhage.Meanwhile, Nagaland’s Koridang constituency (ST) seat fell vacant following the death of veteran Naga leader and sitting MLA Imkong L Imchen on Nov 11, 2024, after a brief illness.Imchen, 75, was elected to the Nagaland assembly five times from Koridang — first as an Independent in 2003, then on Naga People’s Front tickets in 2008, 2013 and 2018, before winning on a BJP ticket in 2023.According to the final electoral roll published on March 13 after the special summary revision, Koridang constituency has 22,266 general voters (11,253 males and 11,013 females) and 124 service electors (123 males and one female). The constituency has 30 notified polling stations, where EVMs with VVPAT will be deployed to ensure transparency.
