A silent welfare endeavour of Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government displayed a pleasant gesture when transgender also got benefited from the Post-Matric Scholarship/Fee Reimbursement Scheme for Backward Classes is a financial assistance program managed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh to support students from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. It aims to reduce the financial burden of higher education, thereby increasing literacy and fostering a skilled youth workforce.During the academic year 2025-26, more than 2.7 million students have received scholarships under the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for Backward Classes. Apart from male and female students, some transgender member of society were also benefited from the scheme, fructifying the basic idea behind this.Prayagraj district emerged as the one with most beneficiaries under the scheme with a total of 169,489 students receiving scholarship from the government. Ghazipur district ranked second, with more than 134,000 students receiving scholarships followed by over 119,000 students in Azamgarh, more than 115,000 students in Jaunpur, and 88,859 students in Varanasi received scholarships. These figures truly reflect the fruitful impact of the scholarship scheme across the state.According to scholarship distribution data, 472,764 girl students studying in Classes 11 and 12 received scholarships. In addition, 380,667 boys and 2 transgender beneficiaries were also awarded scholarships. In higher education, scholarships were provided to 1,001,084 female students, 931,906 male students, and 8 transgender beneficiaries. The Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme is not limited to the intermediate level. It also covers higher education and professional courses. Along with students of Classes 11 and 12, those pursuing professional courses such as B. Tech, MBBS, and MBA, as well as programs like BA, BSc, BCom, ITI, and Polytechnic, are also eligible and receive benefits under the scheme.Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Government continues to make significant strides in the field of education. In particular, the government’s scholarship schemes have proved highly effective in providing financial assistance to students from backward classes pursuing higher education. The Post-Matric Scholarship/Fee Reimbursement Scheme for Backward Classes has emerged as a new ray of hope for millions of students.The Yogi Government’s efforts have directly benefited millions of families and made higher education more accessible for students. Director of the Backward Class Welfare Department, Umesh Pratap Singh, said, “The Yogi Government’s goal is to ensure that no student in the state is deprived of education due to financial constraints. The benefits of various welfare schemes are reaching a large number of students and other eligible beneficiaries.“He further emphasized that the state government remains fully committed to taking education to the last person in society. The Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme aims to provide strong financial support to students from economically weaker sections, enabling them to progress in their educational journey.Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the scholarship distribution process has been made completely transparent and user-friendly.
Highlights of the scheme
- To provide financial aid to OBC students pursuing post-matriculation studies (Class 11 and above), including undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, and technical courses (such as B. Tech, MBBS, MBA, ITI, and Polytechnic).
- Income Limit: The annual income of the student’s parents or guardians must be Rs 2 lakh or less.
- Benefits: The scheme provides for the reimbursement of non-refundable tuition fees and offers a monthly maintenance allowance. The specific amount of the allowance varies based on the course group and whether the student is a day scholar or a hosteller.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible, a student must meet the following requirements:
- Domicile: Must be a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh or hold a valid UP domicile certificate.
- Enrollment: Must be studying in a recognized government, aided, or private educational institution within or outside Uttar Pradesh.
- Academic Standing: Must have passed the previous year’s examination.
- Documentation: Possession of a valid caste certificate and an income certificate is mandatory.
- Financial Linkage: The student must have an Aadhaar-linked bank account to receive funds directly via the Aadhaar-Based Payment System (ABPS).
How to apply
The application process is entirely online through the official Uttar Pradesh Scholarship and Fee Reimbursement portal.1. Go to the official UP Scholarship Portal.2. One-Time Registration (OTR): New applicants must first generate a 14-digit OTR number by completing an Aadhaar-based e-KYC and mobile verification.3. Registration/Login: Navigate to the ‘Students’ menu to register or log in.4. Application form: Fill in the required academic, personal, and financial details.5. Documentation: Upload necessary documents, including:
- Caste and Income Certificates.
- Mark sheets of qualifying examinations.
- Fee receipts from the current institution.
- Bank account details (linked with Aadhaar).
- Domicile certificate.
6. Submission: After submitting the online form, take a printout and submit it along with all supporting enclosures to the respective educational institution for verification and further processing.The scholarship funds are disbursed directly into the beneficiary’s bank account following successful verification by the institution and the relevant district welfare department thus making implementation of the scheme transparent .
