Mumbai: Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde carried out a ‘bhoomi pujan’ for a project to redevelop a market at Marol on Sunday. The municipal market, located on Marol Church Road in the Andheri (East) area, has a total of 94 licensed vendors with vegetable and fish stalls. It is being redeveloped by the BMC.According to a BMC release, BJ Mehta was appointed as the architectural consultant for this project. The proposed plan includes constructing a basement, ground floor, and five additional floors on a plot measuring 1,062 square metres.The plot, with a permissible Floor Space Index (FSI) of 3, allows for a total construction area of 3,185.80 square metres. A new five-storey building will accommodate the existing licensed vendors on the ground and first floors, while the second floor will be for Project Affected Persons (PAP). The third, fourth, and fifth floors will house the market hall. For the convenience of customers, vegetarian and non-vegetarian stalls will be located on separate floors.The new market building will be equipped with modern amenities, including a platform for loading and unloading, a lift for transporting goods, parking, a warehouse and cold storage, ramps for the differently abled, restrooms, separate staircases, and lifts for the market. The interior will be decorated according to the suggestions of licensed vendors, and landscaping will be done around the building.The entire project is expected to take approximately two years. During this period, licensed vendors will be temporarily relocated.
