Kanpur: An intoxicated man climbed a 50-ft-high water tank in Jarauli Phase-1 in the Barra police station area of Kanpur on Tuesday morning and threatened to jump.Police reached the spot after receiving information and appealed to him through a megaphone to come down, but he refused. A large crowd gathered, creating a chaotic atmosphere. Meanwhile, a police officer began climbing the tank, but the man threatened that he would jump from there and end his life, following which the police officer climbed back down.Police asked the man the reason for climbing the tank, to which he said that his auto had broken down and he did not have money to get it repaired. Police assured him of providing money to get the auto repaired, after which he came down. The drama continued for over two hours. Police then sent him to a de-addiction centre.The man was identified as Shailendra Dubey, an auto driver. According to police, Shailendra was addicted to alcohol. He has two autos, which had broken down and had been sent to a garage for repairs. Due to the autos being out of service, his income had stopped, which caused him considerable distress. Moreover, he consumed alcohol using money he had saved earlier.Police said that on Tuesday morning, Shailendra asked his father Chandra Kumar Dubey for money to get the autos repaired, but he refused to give it. After this, Shailendra went to a liquor shop, bought alcohol, and climbed the water tank in Jarauli Phase-1. After climbing the tank, he drank alcohol there and began abusing passers-by. When passers-by tried to reason with him and asked him to come down, he became more enraged and continued hurling abuses.Someone informed the police about the commotion. Police arrived and tried to persuade him to come down through a loudspeaker, but he threatened to jump down to end his life. Police then called his family members to the spot, who agreed to give him money, but he still refused to come down. Then the police officers said they will give the money to get the auto repaired, after which he came down.Barra inspector Ravindra Kumar Shrivastava said, “The man had climbed the water tank due to financial distress. He was in an inebriated state at the time. He has been safely brought down and sent to a de-addiction centre.”
