Silchar: Cachar police seized 2.2 kg of suspected heroin, 10,000 suspected Yaba tablets, 2,070 kg of poppy husk and over 35 kg of suspected ganja in four separate operations across the district on Monday. Five people were arrested.The heroin and Yaba consignments are estimated to be worth around Rs 14 crore, police said.In the largest seizure by value, police intercepted a truck near a hotel on Ramnagar bypass under Silchar police station following specific inputs. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 150 soap cases containing around 2.2 kg of suspected heroin concealed in a secret chamber of the truck.The heroin is estimated to be worth around Rs 13 crore. Police arrested Abdul Rahim Laskar, a resident of French Nagar under Dholai police station. Preliminary investigation revealed that the truck was coming from Champhai district in Mizoram, police said.In another operation at Gumra Bazar under Kalain police station, police intercepted 23-year-old Jairul Islam and recovered 10,000 suspected Yaba tablets from a red carry bag in his possession. The tablets weighed around 1.309 kg and are estimated to be worth Rs 1 crore.The two other seizures were made at Digarkhal-Kalainchhara naka checkpoint on National Highway 6 along the Assam-Meghalaya border.In one operation, police intercepted a truck travelling from Silchar towards Meghalaya and recovered 69 bags containing 2,070 kg of poppy husk. The consignment is estimated to be worth around Rs 20 lakh. Two persons, identified as Bipul Boro and Arun Boro, were arrested and the truck was seized.In a separate interception at the same checkpoint, police searched another vehicle and recovered 379 packets containing 35.159 kg of suspected ganja. The driver, Arup Kalita, a resident of Nalbari district, was arrested and the vehicle seized.Police have initiated separate legal proceedings in connection with the four seizures and are questioning the accused to ascertain the source and intended destinations of the consignments.Investigators are also probing possible links among the seizures and attempting to identify the wider interstate networks involved in trafficking narcotics through Cachar, which shares borders with Mizoram, Manipur and Meghalaya.Further investigation is underway.
