Udupi: Deputy commissioner Swaroopa TK Monday directed officials to scientifically maintain roads to ensure safe and smooth vehicular movement and mandated that all cargo vehicles install speed governors limited to 60km/h.At the road safety committee meeting, she asked regional transport officers to ensure the installation of speed governors in all goods transport vehicles with six wheels or more. Noting that ready-mix concrete (RMC) vehicles cause concrete spills and overloaded sand transport vehicles lead to road damage and increased accidents, she instructed strict enforcement of the law.Expressing dissatisfaction over the non-implementation of earlier directions to install doors on all private and govt buses, she ordered a report within two weeks detailing the number of buses, the status of door installations, and action taken against violators. “Fitness certificate should only be granted if doors are installed,” she said. She said safety measures such as signboards, humps, speed breakers, barricades, and zebra crossings must be prioritised near schools and colleges.Raising concern over passengers throwing water bottles and trash from buses, she said instructions to install trash bins on buses had not been adequately implemented and called for further action by RTOs.Safety measures have been implemented at 18 identified black spots on national highways in the district, she said, directing officials to complete work in the remaining areas. The DC also instructed the municipal commissioner to prohibit parking in congested urban areas and remove unauthorised roadside vending, fast-food stalls, and pushcarts while identifying vending zones as an alternative. Buses must stop only at designated stops, she said, directing action against violations.Decisions on additional median openings on national highways should be based on a joint survey by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the police department, she added.SP Hariram Shankar, Udupi City municipal commissioner Mahantesh Hangargi, and other district officials were present.
