Srinagar, Sep 17 : Drivers deserve greater respect and welfare support for their contribution to society and the economy, DIG Traffic Kashmir Haseeb-ur-Rehman said here on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar on the occasion of a walkathon organised as part of Drivers’ Dignity Day, Haseeb-ur-Rehman, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said drivers are an essential part of society and the economy and that greater efforts are needed to ensure their dignity and welfare.

“Throughout the year, efforts will be made to ensure that drivers receive the respect they deserve. Society has an important role to play in this, and the Traffic Police will also fulfil its role,” he said.

The DIG called for greater attention to the welfare of departmental and private drivers, particularly after retirement, and urged the corporate sector to support drivers and their families through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

He also proposed financial assistance for the children of drivers pursuing Class 12 and college education. “These are the issues we have raised here. I hope these points will reach the concerned quarters and that action will be taken on them,” he said.

He said it is a matter of pride that Drivers’ Dignity Day had been launched from Srinagar and is being observed across the country.—(KNO)
