Kanpur: An ambulance returning to Varanasi after discharging a patient from Medanta Hospital in Haryana rammed into a container on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Kannauj district late Saturday, leaving its driver dead on the spot and four passengers seriously injured.The accident occurred at kilometre 192 of the expressway in the Tirwa Kotwali area when the speeding vehicle hit a container moving ahead.Police and the expressway rescue team reached the spot after receiving information about the accident. The driver’s body was recovered and sent for postmortem, while the injured were admitted to the Government Medical College.The deceased driver was identified as Rajesh Singh, a resident of Bashi Bazaar in Ghazipur district.The injured were identified as pharmacist Amit Chandra Verma, a resident of Jathi in Varanasi, Sapna, a resident of Laggharpur Kudaha in Jaunpur district, and her children, Sujata and Ritesh alias Satyam.In the preliminary investigation, police said the driver may have dozed off after driving continuously over a long distance, causing the vehicle to go out of control.
