Kolkata: The driver and conductor of a private bus plying on route 234 (Belgharia-Golf Green) allegedly assaulted the owner of a two-wheeler after ramming the victim’s scooter at the Mullick Bazar crossing on Monday afternoon. The incident left the victim — Gulam Mustaza, a resident of Crematorium Street in Beniapukur— with severe injuries.Gulam was treated and discharged from CNMC Hospital. He filed a complaint at Park Street Police Station under BNS sections pertaining to rash driving, endangering life, wrongful restraint and assault. Police said the unidentified bus driver navigated negligently, endangering lives, and crashed into Gulam’s two-wheeler. The scooterette sustained heavy damage, and Gulam, thrown off, sustained multiple injuries.When Gulam and other bystanders tried to stop the bus from fleeing, the driver and the conductor wrongfully restrained and physically attacked him, worsening his wounds. Gulam indicated that he plans to get a follow-up medical exam and then seek legal aid.Police have seized the bus and are scanning CCTV from nearby shops and signals. There has been no arrest yet, but a manhunt is underway. An officer said, “We are verifying witness statements. Action is imminent.”Last year, similar incidents claimed 40-odd lives citywide, according to latest traffic police data.
