Jamshedpur: The East Singhbhum administration has launched a joint enforcement drive against autorickshaw drivers flouting rules as Durga Puja shoppers begin crowding markets in Sakchi, Bistupur and other commercial areas.The transport department and traffic police started the campaign on Tuesday to regulate autorickshaw movement, prevent illegal parking and ensure compliance with traffic rules. Officers said the move followed repeated complaints of congestion caused by autos stopping near market entrances, roundabouts and busy intersections.A few drivers were penalised on the first day, though officers said the initial focus was on awareness. Public announcements were made to inform drivers about the enforcement measures and traffic regulations.DSP (traffic) Sriniraj Kumar said strict action would be taken against violators. Drivers operating without a valid licence or the prescribed uniform will be fined Rs 500. Action will also be taken against autos parked randomly on roads or near roundabouts and crossings.The campaign follows a meeting between the traffic police, transport department and representatives of the Shikshit Berojgar Tempo Chalak Evam Sanchaalak Sangh, the authorised auto drivers’ union. Drivers have been directed to stop at least 50 metres from turns and roundabouts while picking up or dropping passengers and to use designated auto stands.DTO Maheshwari Prasad said special camps would help e-rickshaw drivers obtain licences. Auto operators have seven days to obtain or renew permits. With over 16,000 autos operating in the city, union leaders have sought route-wise quotas to reduce overcrowding and ease congestion.
