Nagpur: Acting on specific intelligence that gold smuggled through the Indo-Bangladesh border was being transported for delivery in Mumbai, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Nagpur, intercepted a passenger at Nagpur Railway Station and recovered 2 kg gold bars worth Rs 3 crore.The passenger was travelling in Jnaneswari Express. On Aug 4, a thorough search led to the recovery of 16 gold bars of foreign origin, tightly packed with brown adhesive tape and wrapped in old newspapers. The action was taken under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.Sources in DRI said that the arrested passenger accepted that he received and concealed the gold which was to be delivered to an undisclosed recipient in Mumbai.Officials at DRI Nagpur confirmed that the seized gold bars bore clear signs of foreign origin and deliberate defacement, a common method used by smugglers to obscure markings and facilitate concealment.Further investigation is in progress to identify the larger network involved in the smuggling operation, including the sources across the border and the intended recipients in India. Authorities are examining the passenger’s travel history, contacts and financial trails to dismantle the module.
