Ketugram (East Burdwan): A stray dog bit over 40 people, including a child, in villages across Ketugram-I block in East Burdwan within Thursday afternoon and evening. The attacks began in Hatkaluha village before spreading to neighbouring areas. Residents said the dog had recently given birth to puppies, which a jackal had allegedly killed, triggering a sudden change in its behaviour. The cause of the attacks could not be independently established. “The dog had no visible physical injuries,” local Year Ali said.Debdeep Banerjee, block medical officer of health at Kandra Health Centre in Ketugram, said local reports indicated that more than 50 people had been bitten, while around 40 cases had been registered at health facilities in the two worst-affected areas.Residents eventually cornered and killed the dog later in the evening to prevent further attacks. The injured are being treated and monitored for possible rabies exposure.
