Kolkata: Doctors across multiple specialties at IPGMER-SSKM’s Trauma Care Centre are working round the clock to treat the 19 injured rescued from the Taratala collapse site, even as one of the critically injured patients died on Thursday morning. The hospital administration mobilised its emergency response team within minutes of being alerted that victims pulled out of the debris would be brought to the state-run hospital.“Within 15 minutes of getting a call that the injured would be rushed here and the number would be 30 to 35 patients, we got our medical team ready. Since the nature of injury in such accidents involves head injury, fractures at multiple sites and cut injuries, we got senior faculties, including the heads of neurosurgery, orthopaedics and general surgery along with our TCC in charge and ITU specialist on board,” said a senior official at IPGMER-SSKM.As the injured began arriving, doctors immediately started triaging them based on the severity and type of trauma to ensure appropriate treatment. Ten victims were declared brought dead. Two patients — Ganesh Kalandi, 45, and Rajesh Ruidas, 25 — were found to be critical and shifted to critical care. The 45-year-old died on Thursday morning despite intensive treatment.“Most have polytrauma injuries. Some are requiring surgery and we are giving all care required round the clock as a team,” said a senior faculty member involved in the treatment. Sources said this is one of the largest influxes of injured patients from a single trauma incident handled by the TCC since its inception in 2019. As Bengal’s only Level-1 trauma care facility, the IPGMER-SSKM unit has earlier handled mass trauma cases including the March 2024 Garden Reach building collapse and the Nandigram post-poll violence in July 2023. Of the 19 patients currently under treatment, one remains critical, sources said.
