Panaji: A four-year-old doberman afflicted by maggot-infested wounds was rescued from a trench near the Fatorda stadium. Locals said the animal had been trapped there for close to eight days.A distress call was received by the executive secretary of the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, South Goa, Virginia Simoes, who rushed to the spot. Initial attempts were aimed at gaining the dog’s trust as it appeared frightened and weak. Rescue efforts continued through sustained feeding, following which the dog was gradually calmed.Upon closer inspection, the doberman — who appeared to be abandoned — was found to be suffering from a severe maggot-infested wound near its tail.“Such acts of cruelty are unacceptable,” a representative from DSPCA South said, stressing that abandoning animals is a punishable offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.With assistance from Mahadev Sathe of the South Goa Welfare Trust for Animals, the team was able to safely extract the dog from the trench.
