Thiruvananthapuram: The district collector informed the state minority commission that the rehabilitation of the affected people in the areas impacted by severe sea turbulence will be ensured.Commission chairman A A Rasheed was informed of this by the authorities while considering a case taken up suo motu based on reports that there was insufficient intervention from the relevant departments due to the severe sea turbulence in the state.In areas from Beemapally to Pallithura, where the sea turbulence was particularly severe, many homes were damaged and fishing vessels were completely lost. Measures have been taken to include everyone living within 50m of the high tide line, who are currently facing the threat of sea encroachment, in a rehabilitation scheme, the district collector said, in a report submitted to the commission.The fisheries department officials visited and assessed the situation in areas from Shanghumugham to Kannamthura, which experienced severe sea turbulence. Arrangements have been made to ensure that those who lost fishing vessels receive insurance compensation.An offshore breakwater project using geotubes is being implemented for coastal protection from Poonthura to Valiyathura. Houses on the brink of collapse due to sea encroachment have been provided protection by bringing waste sand from the Veli Clay Factory. Tetrapod structures are being constructed to protect the Poonthura coast. The work of building a protective wall by filling soil in geo bags to protect the Valiyathura football ground and fish market is in its final stages, according to the report.
