Dhanbad: A 28-year-old man has been arrested in Dhanbad for allegedly duping job seekers of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of providing them govt employment and promotion in various departments, police said on Monday. Cases were registered against the accused Pankaj Gupta at Dhanbad, Jharia and Bank More police stations in the district and in Palamu.Complainants alleged that Gupta, a resident of Bank More in the city, promised unsuspecting job seekers appointment in the state education and health departments and the police and charged one candidate anywhere between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. In some cases, he allegedly issued fake joining letters to convince his targets that their appointments had been finalised.Gupta’s modus operandi was uncovered when a few of the candidates learnt that the appointment letters given to them were fake. Twelve persons, who were allegedly cheated by Gupta, registered complaints. Police sources claimed Gupta had been duping people for many years now and said his brother’s role is also being investigated.“Gupta had been cheating people from several districts for quite a long time. Based on several complaints filed by those who lost money, he was detained and a probe into the complaints, financial transactions, documents and other evidence have begun,” City SP Ritwik Srivastava said.
