Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MLA and deputy mayor Atin Ghosh on Friday said the RG Kar hospital death was due to local administrative failure.A member of the Rogi Kalyan Samity, Ghosh said there had been no proper meeting of the samity in a long time. “I will call for an emergency meeting on Monday. A preliminary investigation report must be submitted. We need to see what measures the administration needs to take to prevent such incidents in the future. Everyone must be vigilant. This incident is due to local administrative failure, which cannot be denied.”BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari termed it as “murder” and blamed the Bengal govt for the incident. The leader of the opposition claimed the elevator at the RG Kar Medical College, where the man died, was under maintenance at the time. “I have documents with me that they intentionally killed (the man) using a lift that was being repaired. A case of murder should be immediately registered in the matter,” he told reporters while campaigning at Mahishadal in East Midnapore. The BJP’s Bengal unit also targeted the Trinamool Congress dispensation over the incident, saying the RG Kar hospital has again made headlines and alleged the govt’s negligence towards the healthcare system. The victim, Arup Banerjee, 40, was a contractual worker with the South Dum Dum Municipality and an active Trinamool Congress worker. Locals also recalled his active involvement in politics as a Trinamool worker, where he served as an assistant booth level agent and played a key role in the SIR process. “He was an ardent Trinamool worker and, above all, a wonderful human being. We still can’t believe he died such a tragic death. He will always be missed,” said Trinath Das, a party functionary in Dum Dum.
