Mangaluru: The DYFI Mangaluru City Committee has urged the govt to provide title deeds and secure the land rights for poor families living on the Tannirbhavi shore. The DYFI Mangaluru City Committee, Tannirbhavi Action Committee and Dalit Rights Coordination Committee Tannirbhavi held a protest in front of the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board in Baikampady on Tuesday, condemning the KIADB officials for erecting barriers around the Tannirbhavi residential area and the sea.DYFI Dakshina Kannada district president BK Imthiyaz said that instead of providing title deeds and securing land rights for the poor, who have been living on govt land between the Tannirbhavi sea and river banks for many years, the KIADB officials are attempting to fence off the area to hand it over to powerful entities.“This move is seen as a ploy to evict the poor and is unconstitutional. The barriers are obstructing the livelihood of the poor who rely on the sea. The district administration should remove the fences,” he said and warned that the struggle would intensify if harassment of the poor continued. He questioned the funds approved for fencing the poor’s colony, despite the KIADB claim of no funds for repairing the pothole-ridden industrial area roads.DYFI district secretary Santosh Bajal criticised the lack of political will among local representatives, stating that Tannirbhavi residents still haven’t received title deeds and are only remembered during elections.Former corporator Dayanand Shetty, Action Committee secretary Yogesh Amin and DYFI city secretary Tayyub Bengre also spoke. A memorandum was submitted to a KIADB officer, urging the authorities to stop the fencing work.
