Vinobha KT | TNNMangaluru: Activists promoting the Tulu language have renewed their demand for the inclusion of Tulu script on signboards at public offices. People’s representatives, Tulu activists and the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy have urged the Mangaluru KSRTC division to display Tulu script on the name board in front of its bus stand in Bejai. Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath has written to the senior divisional controller of Mangaluru KSRTC division, demanding that the KSRTC should consider including Tulu script on the name board in front of the bus stand.Kamath explained that the process of installing a new signboard in front of the bus stand is currently under way, and giving a place to the Tulu script on this welcome arch alongside Kannada and English will reflect the cultural heritage of Tulu. “It would be a most meaningful step towards the promotion of the language of Tulunadu,” he said.“Using the Tulu script will show respect to the Tulu language, culture, and the people of the soil. Furthermore, it will also be a significant contribution towards the preservation and promotion of the local language. The Tulu script has already been incorporated into the signboards of the Praja Soudha and the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC),” he said. The Mangaluru City Corporation had added Tulu script to its main signboard in 2025, during the tenure of then mayor Manoj Kumar.A source said there has been a growing demand for all govt offices, public institutions and elected representatives to display signboards in Tulu script alongside Kannada and English. Several Tulu organisations have also been campaigning for the inclusion of Tulu on KSRTC bus stand signboards and other public signage to promote the language and secure wider recognition.Rajesh Shetty, senior divisional controller of KSRTC Mangaluru Division, said that the corporation has not taken a final decision yet. “The work of installing new signboard is under process, and a decision on Tulu script has not been finalised yet,” he said.
