New Delhi: The University of Delhi has suspended three students from their courses of study with immediate effect in connection with an incident reported on September 23 involving two women students, following an FIR lodged by the Delhi Police.
In an official statement issued on Monday, the university said the action was taken on the basis of the FIR lodged by Delhi Police regarding the incident that occurred on the evening of September 23.
Separate orders issued by the Office of the Proctor show that the suspended students are LL.B. students of Law Centre-II.
The students have been suspended under Clause 3(e) of Ordinance XV-B of the Delhi University Act, 1922. Their entry into the premises of the University of Delhi has also been banned with immediate effect. The suspension orders state that the action has been approved by the university’s Competent Authority.
What happened on September 23?
The university’s suspension orders do not provide details of the incident. Delhi Police had earlier said that an FIR was registered following a complaint by a woman student regarding an alleged harassment incident near Hakikat Park in Mukherjee Nagar on the evening of September 23.
According to police, the complaint concerned an alleged eve-teasing incident involving a group of men travelling in a vehicle. Media reports based on the complaint said two women students alleged that the occupants passed lewd remarks at them and followed them after they objected. One of the students also alleged that when she and her friend stopped to record the incident, the occupants attempted to pull them towards the vehicle.
Delhi Police subsequently registered an FIR at Mukherjee Nagar police station in connection with the complaint. The police investigation is underway.
The university has now suspended three students from their courses and barred them from entering university premises in connection with the FIR.
The university’s statement does not specify the individual allegations against the three students or make any finding of guilt. The disciplinary action has been taken on the basis of the FIR lodged by Delhi Police.
