New Delhi: For many commuters heading to the domestic terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport, the final stretch near Mehram Nagar often slows to a crawl, as roadside vendors, parked vehicles and encroachments squeeze already busy roads. In an effort to ease congestion on roads leading to the domestic terminal, Delhi Traffic Police conducted a special joint enforcement drive this week in the airport area, targeting illegal encroachments and traffic violations that slow vehicular movement. The drive was carried out in coordination with airport operator GMR Group and residents of village Mehram Nagar, located close to the domestic airport. During the operation, authorities removed unauthorised hawkers, rehris and other roadside encroachments occupying carriageways and pavements. Vehicles parked in violation of traffic rules were also cleared to restore the free flow of traffic in the area.Over five enforcement drives conducted this week, traffic police issued 331 e-challans. 89 vehicles were booked under VoCA (Violation of Carriage Act provisions), and 63 vehicles were towed away for illegal parking. Officials also removed 9 roadside rehris during the action. The operation on ground was led by traffic inspector Devender Tomar, along with the traffic staff deployed in the area.Delhi Traffic Police officials said such coordinated drives would continue in the airport area and other critical locations to keep roads free of encroachments and illegal parking, improve traffic flow and enhance safety and convenience for commuters.
