NEW DELHI: A 12-year-old Delhi schoolgirl died days after her mother alleged that she was “tortured” and left distressed following an incident with a teacher at her government school in East Vinod Nagar on July 22.“My daughter was tortured in class, leading to her depression. No one from the school came to see her when she was unwell,” the girl’s mother alleged.The Class VII student died on August 27. Her family alleged on Monday that the teacher had scolded and beaten her on July 22, following which she fell ill and her condition deteriorated.The Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into the girl’s death.Education minister Ashish Sood said the teacher has been transferred with immediate effect to ensure that the investigation is conducted fairly and without interference.Police said the girl had a history of epilepsy. They added that no complaint was made against the teacher between the alleged incident and the girl’s death.The family also cremated her on the day she died and approached Kalyanpuri police station with the allegations only on Monday.According to the family, the girl was allegedly scolded by the teacher on July 22 for not carrying a book and was asked to stand at the back of the classroom.She was reportedly unwell at the time. The school then called her family, who took her home before she was later taken to hospital.Police are examining the allegations, the sequence of events following the incident, the girl’s medical records and her course of treatment.Sood said the government was treating the matter with “utmost seriousness and sensitivity” and assured that strict action would be taken if the inquiry established any negligence, dereliction of duty or irregularity.According to a Delhi government official, the education director also met the principal of the school in connection with the matter.
