New Delhi: An investigation into the alleged suicide of an 18-year-old girl in her govt school in Shahdara has revealed that the CCTV camera installed at the spot was not working.A senior police officer confirmed the details. He said the extent of the area covered by the camera was still unclear as it was facing the roadside. However, it was the only CCTV camera installed at the location. When asked whether CCTV cameras in other areas near the school were working, the officer confirmed that those were working.Police found a matchbox and a bottle from the spot where the girl’s burnt body was found Saturday. “There was a smell of petrol coming from the bottle, so we suspect it contained petrol. However, it has been sent to the FSL for examination,” a police source said.According to police, a note purportedly by the girl was also found. It reportedly mentioned a boy and said that she had been unable to fulfil her parents’ expectations. It also stated that no one should be held responsible for her actions.“She had asked them not to harass the boy,” the officer said, adding that the boy was yet to be identified. No case has been registered so far. An inquest has been initiated.Police got a PCR call about a fire in the school and rushed to the spot, where the 18-year-old student was found in a severely burnt condition Saturday. The girl’s elder sister told reporters that she and their niece had dropped the girl at the school and she seemed happy. “She was laughing when she went inside. I don’t know what happened after that,” the elder sister said and broke down. The girl’s uncle raised suspicions of foul play and questioned why her school bag was not checked. He said the girl’s parents had gone to Koderma in Jharkhand, following her maternal grandmother’s death. “It is impossible that she could have set herself on fire. She was a good student and was not facing any issues. False information was being spread about her,” he said. The uncle wondered how the incident could have gone unnoticed despite CCTV cameras and the presence of staff in the school. He also alleged that the family was informed late and demanded that the possibility of another person being involved should be investigated.
