NEW DELHI: Rape and murder accused cabbie Basu Kumar Singh had driven past the spot in south Delhi’s Mehrauli where the minor victim was sleeping with her family nearly an hour before abducting her. Police said Singh parked his car and lurked around for nearly 45 minutes, waiting for the right moment to lift the child without waking up the parents.Police sources said the girl was initially asleep in her mother’s arms. Singh abducted her only after she had turned in her sleep and lay a little away from her mother.Meanwhile, a senior police officer said reports of the postmortem and a potency test done on the accused are awaited.Broken strands of hair recovered from the cab and the spot where the 10-year-old girl’s body was found could prove to be crucial evidence in the investigation.Sources said forensic teams collected hair strands from two locations: inside the cab used in the crime and from the spot where the body was dumped. The samples have been sent for forensic examination.

Clothes recovered during the probe have also been sent for testing. “The car and the crime spot were examined using chemicals to detect traces of substances and bodily fluids,” a source said, adding that investigators are awaiting the laboratory reports.Sources said bloodstains were also found at the spot where the body was dumped.A towel suspected to have been used to strangle the minor, along with the stones allegedly used in the attack, were also seized from the spot.Police said they have obtained two-day custody of the accused and may take him for reconstruction of the crime sequence.During interrogation, Singh claimed he rolled up the car windows immediately after the kidnapping so her screams wouldn’t be heard. However, police suspect he may have slapped and threatened her into silence. Officers said the girl had visible injuries on her chest, allegedly caused by being struck with large stones.Police have blocked Singh’s cab aggregator ID as part of the probe and have written to the cab aggregators seeking details about his enrolment and the screening process followed during his onboarding.Investigators further found that Singh had been involved in a road accident in another state days before the crime. His brother said, on June 19, Singh had briefly dozed off while driving the cab and woke up to find a truck approaching. To avoid a collision, he swerved the vehicle, damaging one of its doors.The vehicle will now be sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for a detailed forensic examination.Earlier, it was reported that the accused had appeared for police recruitment examinations in Bihar. During interrogation, he also told police that he had aspired to become a police officer.
