NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have arrested a woman in connection with an alleged incident of racial abuse and criminal intimidation involving three women tenants from Arunachal Pradesh in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. Police said a case was registered at Malviya Nagar Police Station under Sections 79, 351(2), 3(5) and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Harsh Singh and his wife Ruby Jain, residents of Malviya Nagar. The FIR stems from a dispute that allegedly took place on February 20 around 3.30 pm. According to investigators, the three complainants were getting electrical installation work carried out at their rented fourth-floor flat when dust and debris from the drilling allegedly fell into the premises below, triggering an altercation with their neighbours. The women alleged that during the confrontation, the accused verbally abused them, made derogatory and racial remarks targeting their North-Eastern identity, used objectionable language, insulted their modesty and issued threats. Police said no physical injuries were reported, though the complainants cited mental harassment and humiliation. SC/ST Act invoked In an update issued on Wednesday, Delhi Police said that during further investigation, relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were invoked based on the material available on record. Ruby Jain was subsequently arrested. Further investigation is underway under the supervision of senior officers. Video evidence under scrutiny A purported video of the incident has been circulating on social media. Police said the footage, along with CCTV recordings and witness statements, is being examined as part of the probe. Accused claims cooperation Harsh Singh, the co-accused, said he and his family were cooperating with the investigation. “We are showing complete cooperation with Delhi Police and have full faith in the police and the Indian judiciary. We are definitely ashamed. I am not such a person, but it was in the heat of the moment. We did not intend to do so. I want to ask the social media users to listen to both sides of the story,” Singh said, while urging against “media trials.” He also alleged that his family had been subjected to online harassment following the incident and issued an apology “to all Northeastern people.”
